World Book Day: Life Finds a Way in the Computing Lab!
This week, the Computing Department traded silicon for scales to celebrate World Book Day!
Our students used Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park as inspiration, stepping inside its (highly unstable) digital infrastructure. Students were tasked with becoming InGen Systems Engineers, tackling real-world programming challenges inspired by the original novel.
What was on the mission log?
• The Nedry Challenge: Decoding “trapdoor” logic and bypassing system lockouts.
• The Census Audit: Debugging the famous “Hidden in Plain Sight” population error to find out exactly how many dinosaurs were really on the island.
• 3D Bio-Design: Using vivid descriptions from the book to inspire and model 3D designs of the park’s iconic enclosures and landscapes.
It’s been a fantastic week seeing our students bridge the gap between literature and logic, proving that sometimes the best way to understand a story is to fix its code!
