In-school formative assessment is used by teachers to evaluate students’ key skills, knowledge and understanding on a day-to-day basis and hence to inform their planning of further student learning.
Summative Assessment
In-school summative assessment enables teachers to evaluate the skills and knowledge learnt at the end of a teaching period, unit, or module.
In KS3, summative assessments are used to provide a grading based on the progress of the students towards their target grade, achieving: ‘Concern, Developing, Secure, Accelerated.’
In KS4, summative assessments are used to provide a current working grade and projected grade for the end of year 11.
Marking
For core subjects a piece of marked work is completed once every 3 weeks. For non-core subjects a piece of marked work is completed once every half-term.
For subjects that do not use written work an assessed piece of work will be completed once per half term for which feedback will be provided.
Feedback
Feedback is provided from teacher or peer marking most likely in the DIRT (designated improvement and reflection time) format or similar such as WWW (what went well) and EBY (even better if).
Comments are specific and directly linked to key skills and success criteria.
Students respond to their feedback in green, the format of this is specific to each subject area.
